Hello, I'm Roman Baines

Hello Welcome to my Final Major Project Portfolio.  Video Editing is the  subject for this portfolio.  I have a passion  for Video Editing and would like to share it with you all.  I will show everything that i've done including my Video that I've created.

Case Study Thelma Schoonmaker

Thelma Schoonmaker is an American Film Editor born on the 3rd of January 1940. She has had a collaboration with director Martin Scorsese with over five decades of working together. Thelma received many awards for her work including 3 Academy Awards.

Two BAFTA Awards, and four ACE Eddie Awards.  She has been honoured with the British Film Institute Fellowship in 1997, the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement in 2014, and the BAFTA Fellowship in 2019. Thelma started working with Martin on his debut feature film, Who's That Knocking at My Door (1967), and has edited all his films since Raging Bull (1980). She has received a record nine nominations for the Academy Award for Best Film Editing and has won a record three times for Raging Bull, The Aviator (2004), and The Departed (2006). She has also been nominated for the BAFTA Award for Best Editing a record 11 times, winning twice for Raging Bull and Goodfellas (1990).

The films she edited was the likes of Wolf of Wall Street which came out in 2013. One of the best movies in my opinion. There was many other Films she edited was Silence and The Irishman they were edited twice at the same time by her.

'Raging Bull,' 'The Aviator,' and 'Hugo.' These are all Films that edited also. The first ever film she edited was the Raging Bull which was edited in (1980) in a fast, snappy quick cuts edit style.

She also edited The Departed in (2006), she took out the roughness and got rid of the bumps to make the editing look smooth also playing smooth. Sometimes she kept in the roughness and bumps into the edits to create a sense of realness in the film, and showing what it is like in films.

The Craft of Editing

30th December 2024

Website

William Boyd

https://www.metfilmschool.ac.uk/articles/blogs/the-craft-editing

What I learnt... is editing it creates a flow of emotion , editors decide weather a piece of editing stays within the film or not and if it would fit the story or even narrative.

The editors job is to tell the story from behind the screen. It could be a very slow edit ,from a close up shot into a really fast paced action edit. The pacing of how they choose shots it's very important. Also  a good edited film it really engages the audiences attention and they can't take their eyes off it.

The website on this occasion didn't find useful , this was because when producing my Final Major Project, I wasn't creating emotion or even telling a story ,it was just clips together about editing.   It wasn't a bad website for information it's just not what I needed.

What is Film Editing — Editing Principles & Techniques Explained

  • Secondary Source

  • Website

  • Rafael Abreu

  • What I learnt.... is in this website that there is so many different techniques , in video editing that you can learn and develop. You can do this by practising different styles of edit's or even different cuts to see if you like it or not. Also it tells you what they are and how they can do used.

  • The research I have gathered , in this website wasn't useful on this occasion , this is because there was many techniques that I know of that I didn't use in my final major project. It was just a simple cut and delete for this project. Also just adding my script and copying it into Premier Pro.

What Editing a Big Movie Looks Like

This video is about Video Editing and what it is like working in the industry. What I learnt from this video, is how many hours it actually takes to edit a whole film sometimes it can be months and months.. This is because they normally do a draft edit to see if any changes would be needed in this version or if they missed something or wanted to add something new , they could do that in the final edit.

This Video wasn't useful on this occasion , this was because it didn't help me with my final Major project this video was talking about , how long it takes too edit movies and etc. I didn't need any of it during Final Major Project.  It was a useful video to learn from but just not what I needed for my Project.

Film Terminology

What I learnt that is relevant to my project is...

There are a few editing Terminology's

Cross-Cutting is an editing technique of interspersing, interweaving, or alternating one action with another. Usually, these will be in separate places or locations, and the cut combines the two. It is an editing method to suggest parallel action or two events that take place simultaneously.

A cross-fade is a fading technique with two components. First, there is a fade to black. Next, it fades into the next scene. When it does not cut to black first, it is referred to as a "dissolve."

A cut is when one shot transitions to the next shot without any effect. We see cuts used all of the time in filmmaking — think "shot reverse-shot" for example. With "shot reverse shot," we see one shot, then a cut, then a reverse shot. This next video explains the process in further detail.

A cutaway is a shot that "cuts away" from the main action to show supporting information – then returns to the main shot to reinforce that information.

Contrast Cut

The contrast cut is all about juxtaposition. It's whenever you cut from one tonal element to another tonal element in order to show diametricity.

Final Major Project Proposal

Section 1 - Rationale

(Approximately 150 words)

Within the first half of this qualification of level 3 2nd Year, I have learnt numerous skills that I can translate into my final project. For example, in my unit 12 project I did the Video editing history and expanded my knowledge and wanted to grow and learn about more of how they edited and what they had to use. I have a particular interest in video editing, and I feel good in applying these skills that I have learnt and developed this year more within video editing. In unit 10 I also used video editing, as of a part of my project for the video with doing a Phineas and ferb edit. The edit was for a video game so I thought I would apply and use my skills to develop the video as it's something I am passionate about. At the start of the year, we also did another video edit, this was through telling a story through video editing. We had 8 shots to choose from and we created a video telling the story. I edited it together using my skills, and experience and I always find it interesting and how it happens like in films.

Section 2 – Project concept

(Approximately 250 words)

My project concept is going into Adobe premiere Pro, and I can work on the concept from home, also at college. My idea is using video editing to show why films use different shot types and why there are effective, and how to do them different cuts, shot types of also different transitions. I will use everything and using my skills to good effect. I have a passion for doing video editing and I thought this would a good idea to perform. I will be creating a video and talking step by step throughout the whole process. Why different shot types would work but also which that wouldn't so you would use another one. I will use films and using clips to show my examples and using them as references and talk about what I would do giving my input on it. In my research side of the project, I will find out information, for if films were going to use a type of editing styles or if they weren't and how it affected the outcome or made the outcome. I will show the films cuts and transitions also. I will find out what different films do certain edit styles or even transitions and how effect it would be for that company or if the director likes how the main editor has produced the piece of video editing, so that is my final project concept. I hope you enjoy this concept that I have come up with I think it's an interesting concept.

Section 3 - Evaluation

(Approximately 100 words)

I intend to reflect on my work by if anything goes wrong during the process or the project, I will reevaluate the situation and come up with a resolution of how to overcome the issues. How I will record my decision making is by using a word document and writing down what I'm doing and why I came up with the decision expanding on why I chose it. Also, will do a reflection journey on explaining my choice's on how I think it's good or bad decision and what I can do to improve, also what is going well during the project and what I'm happy with and don't have to change to improve it.

Section 4 - Proposed Research Sources

What initial research sources (primary and/or secondary) do you intend to use?

The initial Secondary research I will intend to use is websites finding out what style editors used to create these films, also what favourite transitions they like to create. Why they chose to edit a certain piece of a film depending on the shot type that the scene becomes. I will also Harvard reference from which websites I use so everyone knows that the facts aren't fake and that they are real, that I haven't made it up. Another Secondary research I will use in this project, is YouTube and finding relevant clips of films and the editing types and of my favourite films. I will also Harvard reference the clips I use.  For primary research I have created a form on Microsoft. I have created questions including my video. I am using the responses from classmates for primary research.

Contingency Plan

What could go wrong , was flies corrupted which ended up setting me back, so that I would  have  to restart again. The problem solving to that issue was that I back up my flies into other places that I know will be safe for example like teams. So that nothing gets lost.

Another thing that could go   wrong was  if my file sizes was too big. My problem solving to that issue is  compressing the file size down to where it would allow me to send over the file's to my email then I would  able to work on  producing the project and clips.    I predicted that I would have issues , with my files in the planning stage . They kept becoming to big , so had to compress the file down.

Another thing that could go wrong was  If  got sick and I  wasn't able to come into college and continue on what I was working on. The Problem solving to this issue was being able to work from home on my pc completing what I was working on and I sent over everything I had completed that day and sent it to my teacher's for evidence for my final major project.

Final Major Project Schedule

Primary Research

Primary Research , This is a Microsoft form Responses.

The below is the information I gathered after completing video. I got some good feedback.

I could have added some football scenes.  I could have changed the framing of the edit to match up with the Visual with the Audio.

Another thing is in the spider man clip you can't hear the Audio over the clip because it was too loud ,but I knew this issue beforehand but tried every solution to fix it, but couldn't find a solution.

Script

In the 5th and final clip , it's The Dark knight rise The editing style is fast paced with quick, snappy edit's because it's filled with constant action. Using different transition's from scene to scene. From the explosion to the man getting dragged out.

Reflection Journal (FMP)

28/02/25

We have started our Final Major Project, gathering ideas and concepts of what we want to choose to do for our project.

I have chosen to do Video editing as my project as it's my best skill set and something I'm very passionate about also something I really enjoy doing/making projects on the subject. We have started our proposal , I've done the rationale and explained what I have chosen to do and why I wanted too.

Also the skills I've learnt over the last Year and a half to help me with video editing for example with unit 10 I edited a Phineas and ferb video . At the start of the year, we also did another video edit, this was through telling a story through video editing. We had 8 shots to choose from and we created a video telling the story. I edited it together using my skills, and experience and I always find it interesting and how it happens like in films etc.

6/3/25 I started to make a schedule , saying what I'm doing that day , what I need to complete that tasks , when I will complete it set a day. If I have completed it by that time or if I haven't done that task when I said I would , I will note that down. I have fully completed my FMP proposal. I'm happy I completed it that day because that's the day I said I would have achieved it by and I did.

10/3/25

I've got feedback from the proposal that my classmates looked through my work , I've added some changes to what he thought that I needed to change so currently just going through it section by section. But also things that  classmates ,was happy with.

28/3/25 I have got  a research table and I've started to fill that out with the research that I'm beginning to find and look at to do with film editing and how they do it and why then end up do the cuts transitions they do. Also how long it takes too edit the film sometimes they even produce a draft or two before producing the real final edit. I'm finding the research good but a bit difficult as I don't want to over use the same video's or even websites or links, can't find many websites on it right now but on Wednesday when we are back I will have completed the research for the final major project.

2/4/25 I've been continuing with my research part of the final major project. Looking at websites and finding out more information about editors choice's . On Friday it is the last day of term and we will be off for two weeks and we come back on the 23rd I will try and do some work from home if I get the chance too.

4/4/25 Today is Friday and I can't access Adobe premiere pro on this computer so when I'm home doing work in the half term . I will start to create my concept idea and slowly work on it section by section. However when we are back I will try and find a solution to get Adobe premiere pro on all computer's to help me further for my FMP ( Final Major Project).

25/04/2025 This week there is the same issue regarding Premier Pro and with it being in different computer's so what I've done to resolve it is I've found my favourite movie clips and started to edit them on my phone then I will send them to my college email. Also I am looking through the clips and analysing what I can use. Once I've done that I will start to add a script in what I'm going to say and use AI. The clips are about the editing style and why they have chosen that specific edit .

30/04/25 In today's lesson I've been going through the clips on my phone editing them into what I think that I can use. I've ran through a problem which is I can't send the clips to email or even teams to myself or anyone I think the problem is the file size is too big , but I'm not sure how to solve it right now. I will find a way of how to get them downloaded so I can start on premier pro and edit even more.  I predicted that I would have issues , with my files in the planning stage . They kept becoming to big , so had to compress the file down.

1/5/25

In today's lesson I have finished editing my favourite movie clips, on my phone during  lesson. I resolved the issue with not being able to download them cause the file was too big. What I did to overcome the issue was editing the clips even further down to like 20MB and I was able to send the file's to my college email.

In today's lessons what I'm doing is planning out my script on writer duet and I'm starting to put down ideas and the key points that I will end up using in the clips. Why the editors chose that specific edit and how effective it is. For example in Home Alone there was a few edits showing the close ups with Kevin's Mum screaming when they left him. Then the next edit is showing Kevin opening the door it creates a shocked atmosphere, gripping you more in the film.

14/5/25

Today what I have done is put everything from my Final Major Project, put it in a portfolio including this Reflection Journal and the Main Video for my project. I will also add all my other work from this year, into another page. I have fully completed my video as well ,adding my audio over the top of the clips As well. I have exported it and will add it into it. It took me a while to find an AI converter but I eventually found one.

15/05/25 For the solving theoretical problems , I predicted  a problem that kept occurring when I was creating the video , it would never save just on one computer even though I saved the file on to teams this happened on multiple occasions. What I did to solve this problem was complete it in one of the classrooms computer , by re uploading all the video files again and then exporting it once I finished adding the audio. I saved it eventually onto teams.

16/05/25  Evaluation of feedback , the feedback that I have got is from my Microsoft forms surveys. What I have learned from the feedback is a few things , with the audio in the spider man clip , I know that the audio was too loud so you couldn't hear the audio playing in the background. I tried multiple ways too adapt the sound to lower it but I couldn't find a solution. I also can't get onto premier pro to make changes from the feedback results that I gathered.  Another person said add real life goals into the clips as well ,  I would make the changes but can't get onto premier pro still. Those were the two main pieces of feedback that I got from my classmates.

16/05/25 Evidence of ideas explored for your product. My product is a Video editing and showing different edits from movie clips and my target audience is anyone no specific age , I think, my video could go onto YouTube, or even tik tok and Instagram.  I think this would work because everyone now days like these apps, and also edits onto specific movies.

16/05/25  A final method of presentation, is creating a portfolio with everything in. We got told that we had to create this portfolio in a website. This is the final solution that we needed to use.  This is my whole presentation into 1 massive page and I will make sure everything is in Correct heading's and everything is clear.  My Final Major Project video is at the bottom of the page. When putting the Final Major Project , into a website it makes it easier to understand and see also I've also added all my other units into another page.

Home Alone Scene

In my Final Major Project , in the scene where Kevin's Mum screams it cuts into Kevin looking shocked and surprised in which it's one of the biggest moments in Film History. In my project it wasn't clear but that's what it was.

Goal!

Here is Picture 1 and this show before he is about to strike the ball. Creating a eye gripping watch as you think if it will go in or not.

Goal!

Here is picture 2 as he jumps for the ball, to see if he will hit it for fall and miss it the antipcation.  Also the moment was quick so that's why they done the edit , a lighting effect as it goes so quick.

Goal!

In picture 3  this show's that Santigo hits the ball , with a turning scissor kick and he score's and the background does a flashing light in the background , symbolizing a massive moment keeping your eyes peeled to the screen.

Final Evaluation

My Idea

My Idea  is going into Adobe premiere Pro, and I can work on the concept from home, also at college. My idea is using video editing to show why films use different shot types and why there are effective, and how to do them different cuts, shot types of also different transitions. I will use everything and using my skills to good effect. I have a passion for doing video editing and I thought this would a good idea to perform. I will be creating a video on how to do everything and talking step by step throughout the whole process. I will find out what different films do certain edit styles or even transitions and how effect it would be for.

I developed my idea by adding my favourite movie's into the project and choosing clips in which I thought would be good examples to use.  I thought it would give a different perspective into the editing industry. I did not change my anytime during the project, this was because I was set on this idea and really like editing.  This idea was my first and last.

Research

In my research progress , it started off with finding a person that was in the editing industry , which was Thelma Schoonmaker and I did a case study on her and how many films she edited , what type of films also her editing style. This helped me by gathering more research, by finding websites on editing style's, film terminology, also a few youtube video's about editors for film companies, and how many days/months it takes to edit and even a draft version before the actual edit.

I did not find any ideas , difficult I already planned out the ideas that I used when thinking of the project idea, so that I didn't have this problem later on during the project.

There was a practical problem I had   been going through the clips on my phone editing them into what I think that I can use. I've ran through a problem which is I can't send the clips to email or even teams to myself or anyone I think the problem is the file size is too big , but I'm not sure how to solve it right now. I will find a way of how to get them downloaded so I can start on premier pro and edit even more. I found a solution with the issue , I compressed the file size down , when editing on phone I just had to edit down even further to be able to send it to myself and that worked.

Planning

I planned my work to finish my project with using a Schedule timetable of the date it was happening what I was doing that day, what I would need for example like writer duet that day and I would set an end date and if I had completed it by then and if I did I would say it's been completed by the date set.   I did not try anything new or different this was because I was comfortable in the way I was doing this and didn't want to change anything as I was doing as it worked for me.

Reflection

I kept track of my progress by , using the schedule timetable and making sure I had everything and that I was on track and happy with how much progress I was making daily so that I wasn't falling behind.  Also writing a reflection journal and keeping up to date with that , explaining everything. What I learnt about looking back at my work is I could have added some real life football clips into the project, made sure my audio lined up with the clips because it was slightly out in one of the parts.  Take my time with the project and video to make it perfect.  What I would do different next is time is add some low music in the background also. I would make a more primary research to develop further.

Presentation

How I presented my work for the final major project was , by on this website gathering all this informati0n and putting it into one website, so that it is in one place so it makes it easier for them to mark. This was the only option that considered because it's a good layout , easy to use but also understand. I chose to present my final work on  premier pro , adding a link that goes straight to my video so it's easy access.  My audience was any age , this was because I think everyone enjoys movie's and also clips so I combined them, my project was suitable for the intended target audience.
